Ennio Morlotti - Biography
Ennio Morlotti was born in Lecco, on Lake Como, on September 21, 1921,In '45 he signed with Treccani and Cassinari the Manifesto of New Realism, later joining the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti. That same year, thanks to a scholarship procured for him by Lionello Venturi, he was able to stay again in Paris where he met Picasso, Braque, De Staël, Sartre and Camus. But he returned prematurely to Italy where in 1950, after the breakup of the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti, he joined with Birolli and Cassinari the Gruppo degli Otto of Lionello Venturi, proponents of an "abstract-concrete" direction
Morlotti definitively overcomes in landscape every nineteenth-century residue of vision, abolishes distance and makes nature an impenetrable wall, closed in front of the anguished and helpless gaze. Painting itself becomes nature and the dense materiality of color becomes its lush and slabby flesh, a dense chromatic labyrinth with no way out. In the last thirty years, after the discovery of the Ticinese landscape of Mendrisio and the Ligurian landscape, the glimmer of the sky appears in Morlotti's landscapes and the evocative series of Rocks and Bathers is born, where, in different forms, the theme of the anguished bewilderment of the gaze and of man before the wall of his own destiny returns.
Ennio Morlotti died in Milan in 1992.
