PIERO GILARDI - Biography

PIERO GILARDI WAS BORN IN TURIN ON 3 AUGUST 1942. GILARDI HAS BEEN A PIONEER OF TECHNOLOGICAL, MULTIMEDIA AND INTERACTIVE ART EXPERIENCES IN ITALY SINCE THE 1960s. IN 1963, HE CREATED HIS FIRST PERSONAL EXHIBITION “MACHINES FOR THE FUTURE”. TWO YEARS LATER REALIZES THE FIRST WORKS IN EXPANDED POLYURETHANE AND EXHIBITS IN PARIS, BRUSSELS, COLOGNE, HAMBURG, AMSTERDAM AND NEW YORK. STARTING IN 1968, THE PRODUCTION OF WORKS IS INTERRUPTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE TECHNICAL ELABORATION OF THE NEW ARTISTIC TRENDS OF THE END OF THE 1960s: ART POVERA, LAND ART, ANTIFORM ART. COLLABORATES IN THE CREATION OF THE TWO FIRST INTERNATIONAL REVIEWS OF NEW TRENDS AT THE STEDELIJK MUSEUM IN AMSTERDAM AND AT THE KUNSTHALLE IN BERN. IN 1969, A LONG TRANSCULTURAL EXPERIENCE BEGINS DIRECTLY TO THE THEORETICAL ANALYSIS AND THE PRACTICE OF THE "ART OF LIFE" CONJUNCTION. IN THE 1970s, HE DEDICATED TO THE THERAPEUTIC USE OF ART IN MENTAL DISCOMFORT.
AS A POLITICAL MILITANT AND ANIMATOR OF YOUTH CULTURE, HE LEADS VARIOUS EXPERIENCES OF COLLECTIVE CREATIVITY IN THE URBAN AND "WORLD" PERIPHERALS: NICARAGUA, INDIAN RESERVES IN THE USA AND AFRICA. IN 1981 HE RESUMES ACTIVITY IN THE ARTISTIC WORLD, EXPOSING INSTALLATIONS IN GALLERIES ACCOMPANIED BY CREATIVE WORKSHOPS WITH THE PUBLIC. STARTING IN 1985, AN ARTISTIC RESEARCH STARTED WITH NEW TECHNOLOGIES THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE "IXIANA" PROJECT WHICH, PRESENTED AT THE PARC DE LA VILLETTE IN PARIS, FORECASTS A TECHNOLOGICAL PARK IN WHICH THE GREAT PUBLIC COULD EXPERIMENTAL TECHNOLOGY IN A DIGITAL SENSE. OVER THE LAST YEARS IT HAS DEVELOPED A SERIES OF INTERACTIVE MULTIMEDIA INSTALLATIONS WITH AN INTENSE INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITY. TOGETHER WITH CLAUDE FAURE AND PIOTR KOWALSKI, HE ESTABLISHED THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION "ARS TECHNICA" WITH THE PURPOSE OF PROMOTING A COMMON RESEARCH BETWEEN ARTISTS AND SCIENTISTS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ART, TECHNOLOGY, ACTIVITY AND SCIENTIFIC DIVULGATION. AS HEAD OF THE ITALIAN SECTION OF ARS TECHNICA, IN TURIN, HE PROMOTES THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITIONS “ARSLAB. METHODS AND EMOTIONS "(1992)," ARSLAB. THE SENSES OF THE VIRTUAL ”(1995),“ ARSLAB. LABYRINTHS OF THE BODY AT PLAY "(1999) AND NUMEROUS STUDY CONFERENCES ON THE ART OF NEW MEDIA. KEEP THE COLUMN "BACK TO THE FUTURE" IN THE ITALIAN FLASH-ART MAGAZINE, TO DISSEMINATE THE ART OF NEW MEDIA. LIVES AND WORKS IN TURIN.
