Raymundo Sesma: Commissioned Artistic Interventions for Architecture and Outdoor Spaces

Raymundo Sesma develops commissioned, site-specific artistic interventions conceived for buildings, architecture, and outdoor spaces, transforming architectural surfaces and urban structures into expanded fields of pictorial and sculptural action. A significant example is Campo Expandido VII, a monumental public artwork presented in Basel on the occasion of the contemporary art fair Balelatina.

Since 2004, the Mexican artist has produced large-scale works in both Italy and Mexico, working within interior contexts as well as on exterior and industrial architectures. In the Campo Expandido projects, painting is freed from the two-dimensional canvas to engage directly with architecture and the surrounding landscape, acquiring a fully three-dimensional presence.

Through encrypted texts, graphic signs, and references to themes such as globalization, movement, human rights, and cultural exchange, Sesma uses existing structures—such as a port crane—as both surface and metaphor. His works go beyond the idea of monument or sculpture, functioning instead as communicative systems that connect landscape, architecture, community, history, and future.
